While going through my Father's things, my Mother found 4 slides - not having a scanner, I held them up in front of my macro lens; this is my brother Steve's 21st birthday - notice the grumpy little guy on the end...

Grump...

I read an article a few weeks back about photographing slides instead of scanning them, especially, since 15 and 21 MP camera are around now, and how much time it can save with, really, no loss to image quality compared to scanning.

It is a lot faster, that's for sure - I guess it depends on what you want the final product to be...

Is there a rig for this or are you just hand holding or what?

I've seen cheap rigs - but this was just hand-holding, as you can tell by the poor focus.

My pleasure...

Some quick Googling came up with this:

This has opened up a hole new way of thinking for me... as a way to finally put some 4x5 negs in digital format... without the expense of having them scanned... or buying equipment just for that. Now... only to find the time to build it.

A suggestion?

A lightbox, and a piece of black cardstock with a 4X5 hole cut in it - cam on a tripod above.

Voila.

That is essentially what I was thinking... except I got rid of my light box with all the darkroom stuff. Perhaps two pieces of glass and some diffusion material lit with a strobe. I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

And we get too bought in to the idea that specialized equipment is absolutely necessary.

A Cake, A Bottle of Wine, and a "I Bet You Can't" glass that is 3/4 full... Wow, Jim, that was some family you had there. And no vino for little Jimmy, no wonder you were grumpy.

Aside from that, your two eldest brothers looked remarkably clean cut for guys who were teenagers during the Hippy Generation.

...art

ps: the only reason I could read it was that my brother _also_ has an "I Bet You Can't glass, but his is more taller and funnel shaped. No mistaking the sentiment though. :-O

Hippies?

I'll scan some pics from a couple years later - long hair abounding!

Didn't last long, though - my oldest brother Steve soon bought an MG, and took to smoking a pipe, and wearing a tweed cap.
